OK...maybe tha'ts hyperbole...people don't literally erupt into laughter, or even giggle politely into their hands. But when I make mention to others---even other librarians----that I prefer a "global perspective" (meaning considering the world at large), they react as if I've said, "Three cheers for stupidity!".
Having been a World language teacher, a global studies teacher/curriculum planner, and having worked in the corporate world on global initiatives (yes, that means outsourcing)

I got your invitation, thanks. I am with you; we librarians have a great position in that we can give people what they want AND what they didn't know they wanted! Like you, I have a background in world languages (German), and you are right: if there's a way to get folks to talk and understand each other, let's do it!
I will have a picture soon-- we've been in the wild north of Michigan, and have been out of contact with technology (although we could get mobile phone service!).
